New Zealand was one of the first countries in the world to see the sun set on 2007.


Revellers in Sydney took the opportunity to catch a few rays while waiting for the Sydney Harbour fireworks extravaganza.


In China, tourists strolled through ice structures during New Year celebrations at the Ice and Snow World in Harbin...

... while others chose to toast the arrival of 2008 at a bar built from blocks of ice.


In Hong Kong, hundreds of thousands of revellers took to the streets for a mass party to usher in the New Year.


Iraqi Kurds in Sulaimaniya released a fire lantern during their New Year celebrations.

US soldiers got into the party mood during celebrations at their camp in Kabul, Afghanistan...


...while in the UK, Hogmanay revellers gathered in Edinburgh.


Fireworks exploded over the Parthenon in Athens as Greece welcomed 2008.

Masks and flags were the order of the day as fireworks lit up Moscow's Red Square.


The champagne flowed among party-goers on the Champs Elysee avenue in Paris.


German fire-fighters welcomed in the New Year with sparklers in Munich.


In New York, crowds saw in the New Year in the city's Times Square.

In pictures: New Year parade


Thousands of performers from home and abroad entertained huge crowds in central London during the 22nd New Year's Day Parade.


More than 3,000 of them were from the United States, home to these cheerleaders.


The Atlee High School Marching Raiders, from Mechanicsville, Virginia, were among performers watched by thousands who lined the route from Parliament Square to Piccadilly.


Organisers said 475,000 people turned out for the three-hour event.

And many more were expected to watch the spectacle on TV, particularly in the US where it was expected to get its biggest audience yet.


As well as Milwaukee's Marching Highlanders, 18 London boroughs took part entering decorated floats.


TV pictures of the parade shown around the world help boost tourism in London, organisers say.


The two-mile procession route took in Whitehall, Trafalgar Square, Pall Mall and Piccadilly Circus.

In pictures: UK welcomes 2008


The UK ushered in 2008 with pyrotechnic displays large and small. This one was the latter, sent in by Malc Brookes from St Helens, and performed by his wife and two daughters.


Much bigger was the spectacle over the London Eye. Ten fireworks were released every second in a display choreographed by Frenchman Christophe Berthonneau.


An estimated 700,000 people packed onto the South Bank of the River Thames for the countdown to midnight. The cue, as always, was provided by Big Ben.


Despite the rain, the capital's 11-minute display drew onlookers from all over the UK and the world.

Huge crowds also took to Edinburgh's Princes Street to watch the fireworks burst into bloom above the city's castle.


About 100,000 people joined in the street party in Edinburgh and a bit of drizzle did nothing to dampen the Hogmanay spirit. Large crowds also turned out in Glasgow to celebrate.


Last year, festivities in Edinburgh had to be cancelled at the eleventh hour because of severe weather.

In Pictures: New Year's Day Swim


Swimmers around the world have been braving freezing temperatures to take a dip on New Year's Day. This brave soul took to the waves in Whitley Bay, north east England.


These women took part in Scotland's Loony Dook event and had clearly put some thought into their costumes for the world-famous event.


Swimmers took to the sea at Malo-les-Bains near Dunkirk, France - some of them sporting elaborate costumes.


Ice-swimming club the Berlin Seals took its traditional new year dip in sub-zero temperatures in a lake in Germany.

Bathers emerge from the sea at Wicklow Harbour, Republic of Ireland, after taking part in a New Year's day charity swim organised by the Blue Dolphins and Wicklow Swimming Club.


A man leaps into Italy's Tiber river from Rome's Cavour bridge during the New Year's Day traditional dives.


This swimmer plunged into the North Sea in Scheveningen, the Netherlands, and held aloft the belated symbol of a Christmas tree.


People went for a swim under blue skies to celebrate the New Year in the Concha beach of San Sebastian, Spain.
